April 26th; Vote on Sam's Club
The Village Baord will vote April 26th on giving Sam's Club millions of dollars in tax incentives and allowing it to further congest an intersection currently rated as a "D". Please come to that meeting to oppose the vote. It starts at 7 p.m. It's funny how the village board reminds everybody about the CNN/Money list that puts Glen Carbon as one of the top 100 cities to live in. The critieria did not mention anything about access to large retailers from out of state. Could this vote prevent Glen Carbon from getting on the Top 100 list in the future? Worsening traffic, poor supervision on a contaminated site, tax money for corporations, and refusal to listen to citizens don't sound like items that make a place so wonderful to live in. Let's hope that the village board sees how the Sam's will be detrimental to Glen Carbon. But let's also show up to the meeting.

I plan to be there on the 26th - as i was at the meeting on the 12th. Squeeky wheels don't always get the oil : ) Gotta try, though.
The traffic situation is a D; it will be a D after Sams. We already have major corporations in town..54th St. Grill, Walgreens, Best Buy, Pet Smart, etc. At the meeting we were told the Village is working with IEPA on the contaminated site. Just because a few Glen Carbon residents create a squeaky wheel doesn't mean they should win. Probably more people will be employed by the Sam's project than there are Glen Carbon residents who oppose the project. I am proud Glen Carbon is creating jobs in these tough economic days!

Are you also happy about the additional 1% sales tax we have to pay to help Sam's developers, plus an ADDITIONAL 1/2% we will pay when you shop at Sam's. That's what most people are against, not the fact that there will be a Sam's here.
The village board also is paying $18,000 to help 54th st bar and grill pay for their additional water tap on fee (to Edwardsville) so they can add 10 tables and a few additional parking spaces. Do you agree with that also. These are not local companies and many citizens do not feel that we should be put on the hook to help them.
Why not look beyond these SMALL tax issues and look long-term, big picture...how much property tax and sales tax revenue and jobs will Sam's create over the years? These big companies bring people to town who find the small businesses and these people shop there too!

Anyone who is looking at long term would be opposed. Tell me of one town that has done oh so well with a Sams and Wal-Mart? Then list me the ones who have hit hard times? Research Robert research, see what you thing then. Its not just about right now LOOK into the FUTURE! If it doesnt work what are ya gonna do? Say go home we do not want to play anymore you messed up my town.
OK, Anonymous, you tell us which towns have done what...which towns have done well with Walmart & Sam's? Which have not?? Is Fairview suffering?

Im not anonymous, but really? That is just silly.
Really? Yes Fairview is suffering, look at the residential property prices, the neighborhoods, the crime, the traffic nightmares, etc. Move there. See how great it is to live with all of the "issues" that come with turning your town into a Mega Retal Center. Do ya think they are on the 100 best places to live list. Think not. Now if you were to talk apples to apples even I could tell you some stories, but your comparison is plain silly. That is what we do NOT want to become is another Fairview Heights.

Oh yea and after last night we just might not.
I attended the meeting last night (26th) and i must applaud our mayor for his wise statement he made in connection with the Sam's Club issue. After three long hours of talk, pro and con, his announcement was a Big Surprise and appreciated by many of Glen Carbon's citizens.
It's now up to Sam's Club to back off of their 7 million dollar incentive figure or build elsewhere.

Does anyone know why they are meeting for the Sam's Club Project? I thought the decision was made.
