You have to be there!

The Village of Glen Carbon wants to give OUR tax money to THF Realty and their friends at Wal-Mart and Sam’s. We HOPE it doesn’t happen. But the Village Trustees are considering giving OVER SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS to the developer who wants to build a Sam’s Club in Glen Carbon. But if all we do is hope, we won’t stop this waste of tax dollars.

The public hearing is on Tuesday, March 22nd at the Village Hall, 7:00 pm

You need to show up! YOU need to tell the Village what you think! Tell them that sales tax revenue should be spent on the community, NOT GIVEN AWAY to businesses with no loyalty to Glen Carbon.

Just ask yourself; if Glen Carbon is such a great location for a Sam’s Club, why does the Village of Glen Carbon have to pay for it?

Enlarging Walmart and bringing Sams to Glen Carbon will be of great value to the unemployed in the area and add a great deal to the sales tax revenue in Glen Carbon. So, they get some tax advantage..how does this compare to the economic value the Village residents gains in the long run? In this economy, how can anyone be against creating jobs for the unemployed in our area. How can anyone be against a company that is finally willing to come to Glen Carbon and clean up the environmental issues at the site? Stop being stubborn and selfish and step up and help the unemployed and the economy of the area!

See this is the problem. You have not done your research before you spoke. In this economy why should Glen Carbon give money to the largest and wealthest retailer in the world. Why should they get a tax break, do you get one? Tell me how many jobs are LOST when a Wal-Mart moves in? How many people lose health care? What happens to the wages in the area? If you want to create jobs BUY AMERICAN! Wal-Mart is #1 in imports, stand up for America, Stand up for your community! Where did our industry go?????? Ask the Waltons! Stop being irresponsible and take some ownership to this problem. My tax money should only go to companies who SUPPORT AMERICA!

Oh Linda, I forgot to ask you about the traffic? What did you find out about that? hmmm.... Who pays there? hmmm....

Dear "Anonymous" -- I suppose you tell everyone who does not agree with you that they have not done their research! How arrogant...and wrong! I am aware of the things you mentioned about Walmart. What do any of your comments have to do with my comments and lack of research?

Perhaps they should give them a tax break due to the vast amount of money they will bring to the area and the number of jobs that will be created. If you could bring in that much money to our economy you too might quality for that tax break you are whining about.

I said I would like to see people get jobs, Glen Carbon enjoy the sales tax revenue and the environmental issue cleaned up. You have a personal bias against Walmart & Sams and don't want to be caught in a traffic jam.

Linda,

No Linda, many people have a diffrent view than I do, but they have researched the subject and are able to state facts not emotion. I do respect their opnion, may not agree with. It is when someone makes statements that have no substance behind them.

Your comments are again without research. They are just emotion speaking. Arrogant, maybe? Educated on the subject, absolutely!

I also would love to see people get jobs. Why settle for a company who treats its workers so poorly, a company who does more damage to a community than good. I do not feel that anyone should just settle.

And NO the Waltons do not need a tax break. That is just silly. What, we need to BUY them to come here, if it were so profitable they would build without our help. hmmm.... Every company has a responsibility to the community that they come into. This also includes WAL-MART if they have their own money, why take ours.

Lets clean up Old Town, lets help our schools out, lets spend our money on us. If they want to come they will. Why pay them to do so? Desprate???

Give good reason that Wal-Mart and Sams are good for this community? How many jobs? How much money? How will this all effect the traffic? Existing retail? What % of Wal-Mart employees are on State assistance? Why should we pay them? How many Waltons are on Forbes top 10 richest list? How is THF involved with Wal-Mart? I would love to hear your reasons, not emotion.

Also, why did the community fight Wal-Mart in 2007? What were their reasons, and why was there no expansion then?

Linda,

I live in Glen Carbon and Work in Edwardsville. If these two go through I will probably lose my job. I do not see how they are bringing in more jobs and money, they are just shifting it from one place to another. Schnucks, Shop N Save, Dierbergs, Market Basket, Aldi's all of these businesses pay their taxes. Wont our state also be losing money as these stores lose business. Most of these stores supple health insurance and pensions. walmart does not. Personally I do not want a Supercenter or a Sams!

Actually Benco Dierbergs took advantage of the same program so they can afford to fix the problems with the property they built on. It's not uncalled for or illegal. It's ethical, and necessary for any business, BIG OR SMALL, that would ever want to buy that site. Who would want to spend that kind of money out of pocket on a site that would need that extreme, costly, amount of clean up without help from the city and or state when they could buy a perfectly fine piece of property with no environmental issues in the next city or county over. And we are NOT providing any funding for them. Sams would have to generate the money they requested in sales tax on non food items. And the village is NOT held responsible for that money they would borrow from the brokerage company if the deal dose not go through.
